The Midlands

Near Ballymahon, Co. Longford, the Royal Canal opens out into the Ballybrannigan Harbour, where there is a quay and a store, and the recently restored bell-house and waiting room for passengers. Up to the early 1850s, when the railway arrived to the Midlands, emigrants bound to Argentina would have travelled to Dublin by canal boats, and from there to Liverpool to board their ships to South America.
